There has been a right old stooshie online today regarding a page that is on the Midlothian Council website that suggests that a proposal is being looked at to close Crawlees Road to vehicles. The original page can be seen here:
www.midlothian.gov.uk/info/200296/coronavirus/660/spaces_for_people/16 Clearly, this is causing a great deal of concern for many residents of Gorebridge, Mayfield and Newtongrange (not to mention other areas for the other roads included). It is also worth noting that this proposal is from the same list of proposals that previously included removing parking from Main Street, and this turned out to be not real. Posts from local councillors also suggest they have not been consulted about this particular proposal, and neither has Gorebridge & District Community Council (nor have any other Community Councils). We have been in touch with Councillor Muirhead directly, and he is looking into it. Looking at the parent page on the Council website for these proposals, it is stated on the "assessment table" that this proposal has not been accepted (nor rejected). As we understand it, this proposal has not progressed further than being something put forward for consideration. If it were to progress further, a public consultation would require to be undertaken and the many, many opposing views we have heard already would be provided. We'll keep you posted.

What surveys have the council done in traffic, pedestriansand cyclists to justify this and , what about ambulances crews based on Crawlees who use this road for Stobhill, Gorebridge even a7 heading south to Bonnyrigg. Will they have to go through the Bryan's and Newtongrange to attend an emergency in Gorebridge. Surely that could add valuable time to their journey?

Against these proposals. No one in their right mind could think this will be a safe walking route with lorries still allowed. Hopefully the community councils voice is heard and these plans rejected. The sensible thing to do is buy land off the bordering land, widen the road and add pavement but appreciate the cost would be significant. Nothing else is worthwhile doing to the crawlees road. This feels like a proposal to make this classified as a safe walking route so more school buses can be cancelled.

Shutting Crawlees Road would increase time for ambulances herring from the depot which is on that road to Gorebridge

This seems like a great idea. It's very scary to cycle along here at night but it's the main way to get to Mayfield from Gorebridge. Cars can easily take the longer route round but that it's dangerous and impracticable for bikes. So I suppose this proposal.

I live over from midlothain depo. I use this road as my main route of transport to and from work as using newtongrange main street is far too busy in the mornings and adds 10min extra onto my travel time. Closing this road off to us will do nothing but cause even more havoc in and around the area. I've emailed the council in objection also.

This is a ridiculous idea there is no place at Gorebridge Medical center so we have to go to Mayfield to a doctor's and closing this rd will divert us into Newtagrange putting more traffic into the village plus when has there been horse's using this rd if anything it should not let the NWH lorries use it that would make more sense.

All three roads in this proposal are in need of major resurfacing and lighting works before they can be considered safe for cyclists and pedestrians. All are riddled with potholes and have no lighting. These are the main reasons they are underused by these groups, not because of traffic.
